Philanthropy in Action

Mughelli Volunteer Work
Ovie Mughelli has used his celebrity and his prominent position as an athlete to help children. In 2006, he established the Ovie Mughelli Project in his hometown of Charleston, SC. to support underprivileged youth through education, health and sports initiatives. The Ovie Mughelli Project provided an annual Football Clinic and Educational Workshop each year at the Danny Jones Sports Complex in Charleston, SC. The first day of the camp includes a series of educational workshops, a panel discussion, a Women’s Sports Foundation session for girls, and a question and answer session by Mughelli. The second day includes the much anticipated personal coaching on football fundamentals from Mughelli, and an autograph and awards session. Over 150 youth between age 10 -17 participate in the free camp each year.

Mughelli in the Community
Mughelli regularly makes community appearances a priority. Mughelli's family lineage encouraged him to become active with Refugee Family Services, a non-profit group charged with helping refugee women and children start new lives in the United States. He spoke with 50 children from the after school program, which helps with continued education. His audience was diverse in age, background and religion but Mughelli's presence was welcomed with wide eyes and large smiles from the children. Thanks to Mughelli's charitable efforts the students also received a table full of learning tools from Hooked on Phonics. They also received motivational words from Mughelli. "All the things you want to do are great," said the NFL veteran, who says he first thought he'd grow up to be a doctor. "But, you can not get there without education. I had to go to school and learn my science math and history. It doesn't matter who you are, if you have an education and work at it you can be anything you want to be."

The Ovie Mughelli Foundation launching in Atlanta
The Ovie Mughelli Foundation has launched it's new presence in Atlanta by partnering with Atlanta Public Schools, Crim Open Campus High School. OMF has sponsored graduation fees through it's program "Pillars of Success", for a group of students that could not afford to participate in their commencement services. The Foundation has also committed to the Pillar's for Success Program to provide a leadership series for aspiring leaders and entrepreneurs at the High School. The Foundation's new mission will take an environmental spin in it's work with young children and families through it's program "Eco Ambassadors" in 2008 by educating about simple ways to develop eco friendly stewardship principles that improve communities. With plans to develop OMF into a driving force for education and the environment in Atlanta, Mughelli shares the ardent zeal his parents modeled to him while growing up "They were my role models, they said "If I can do this and overcome all the odds, you can do anything, you are in America."

Mughelli Charitable Works
Mughelli regularly gives of his time and generous financial resources. Mughelli understands that developing unique relationships within Atlanta's leading philanthropic community is important. Inspired by youth honored by the Boys and Girls Club of Metropolitan Atlanta, he volunteered to take the industrious group of young people out to the movies and a trip to a game and recreation facility as a celebration for a job well done. Mughelli's generosity has grown from donating $40,000 to charity's that align with his family values, to desiring to develop a larger and structured form to his philanthropic goals by creating the Atlanta based, Ovie Mughelli Foundation.

The Ovie Mughelli Foundation does not accept unsolicited requests for grants. Community Impact Grants are independently identified and approved through the OMF Board of Trustees.
